Hello all,
Today we spent some time learning about Andrew Carniege. He donated 350 million dollars in 1919 (that would be $4320335928.24 in 2008). Wow!!
Following the little knowledge exercise, we examined the Project Two drafts that I returned. I had you print out your feedback from me (currently posted on Moodle), and then we also looked at some of the comments that I made on your draft. Remember, you will be receiving additional feedback on Weds., when your peer and self reviews are returned. You should use these three observations to assist you in revising your text for another submission. Remember all writing is rewriting and reflection. I would be happy to take a look at another draft; just email me it or turn in a hard copy in class.
We also talked about the timed writing exercise that we did on Friday. Remember for the class, we will be conducting a timed writing to conclude the work. I will be emailing the Timed Writing PPT to you all, and I would encourage you to take a look at it. Remember, timed writing essays are meant to test not only your ability to write but your ability to think and to recollect key points from the class, text, or experience. You will want to prepare for the timed writing as best as you can. I asked you all to examine the ppt and then to construct a question. I will be collecting the questions and one of yours will be selected as the final timed writing prompt. Remember to use the various words and prompts to create a powerful question. Your question should focus on either one or a combination of the following: class readings, class discussions, class projects (1,2,3) or class activities.
Lastly, we talked about the Service learning portion of Project Three. We did a short reading that reflected on the idea of requiring service for class or for graduation. As I mentioned I am not requiring that you conduct service, but I am strongly encouraging you to participate in 3 hours of service. If you choose not to do service, then you will need to write a 1 page explanation for why you feel you cannot perform service at this time. However, if you do perform service, you simply need to complete the very basic form attached to the class email.
Jill Bobay of the Service Learning Center visited with us. She provided us with some resources for volunteering and participating in Service. Remember, you only have to complete 3 hours so you don't have a large commitment. JIll recommended that you:
1. Call the organization that you are interested in working with.
2. Let them know the amount of time that you are interested in serving (3 hours)
3. Volunteer
I encourage you to volunteer for the project. Remember, there are tons of opportunities on campus from making sandwiches on Sat. to picking up recycling every week day.
For Weds:
Read: Zafon
Write: Question for Timed Writing
Do: Interview emailed to me (voice recording)
Bring question to class.
Prepare Volunteering
Thanks and take care,
Kat
