Hello all,
Today, following our discussion about relationships, improper and proper, we examined our reactions to a volcano. These reactions illustrated how we handle criticism from others, in particular people in charge of our destinies. (Funny, how do you feel about your peer and self evaluations for project one polished drafts?)
We then watched a brief clip about the metamorphosis. We watched the clip for instances of 1. Text arguments 2. Cultural Values in text and 3. emotions evoked or expected.
This viewing led us to start discussing texts, and how we define texts. Remember, there is a thought, and a pretty dominant one at that, that all constructed images, video, text, and created media are TEXTS, and can be read just like a book, an essay, or a paper. What do you think about that thought? How does that change the way we think about "reading'?
We discussed the various ways that the short clip argues for a respect of the "book" while creating a text that is not like the "book." We discussed the images evoked in the short clip--i.e. the cross/gravestone, and what values, arguments and emotions are expected from the viewer in regards to these images. We also explored notions of construction and effect/affect. How do you think this piece is "making us think" about the text?
And we watched "The Holy Land Experience" WTB!
Good Discussion!
We also started to shift to engaging our scholarly roles as members of the academic discourse community of our choice. We started by first going to "The Google" to conduct a basic search for web-based information sources. Remember, there is no such thing as a "bad" source, but there is a such thing as an "unreliable" source. Wikipedia is a starting place, but it is not the only place for information.
*remember, "speak" with your "colleagues" i.e. let others who are in the field, help you with your research. How do you do this? Why by looking at other sources for whom they used to help them in their research and construction of text. One simple way to do this is to search for: key word + the word "bibliography."
For Monday:
Read:Vogler 127-141
Book III of Kafka (Weds)
Write: Annotation for Vogler
Do: Complete a list of Key words for Project II
Locate three sites that are related to your topic
-list the urls for the sites
-explore and explain the following:
Who is writer of the site? Who does he or she want to read the site?
When was the site created? Is it updated regularly?
Where is the site located? Is it affliated with an organization?
What is the argument of the site? Remember all sites/texts have an argument. What does this site seem to support/attack in its presentation of information?
Take care, and email me with questions,
Kat
