Hello all,
Today in class, we started with a little exercise that examine the hidden attributes of our personality which we try to mask. This exercise, about Cinderalla , led into our first multi-media text exploration, where we attempted to see the hidden connections and embedded ideas in the m-m text.
We watched a short newsreel from 1934. The clip is located at ecandp2009spring.blogspot.com for those of you who want to rewatch it. Following the footage, we partnered up with another student, and listed the connections to our discussions, readings, and writings and mentioned the unconnected areas. We then shared these analytical observations in a round table discussion. Many observations were made that truly reflected a sense of connection between the ideas that we have been exploring and the presentation in the newsreel. Here is a link to a professor who explores media in a variety of fashions. Check it out!
We then shifted to discussing our "first drafts," i.e. our free writes. The work that you have created ultimately exists as the first draft of your ideas in relation to this project, as you have started to put "pen to paper" in the generation of a new textual arena. We spoke about selecting one of the issues or areas for further exploration. Here are some key aspects as you move forward:
1. Have fun. Work on creating a narrative that expresses a sense of your identity and reflects on the knowledge that you gained from the experience.
2. You can be creative. I am not looking for a strict accounting of the experience; instead, the text should really be a representation of your memory of the experience. Try and capture the sense of the journey, not the logistics.
3. You will be sharing these ideas with your peers, so make sure that you select a topic or area that you are comfortable sharing.
We moved to the computers, where we went to moodle and opened the "Hero's Journey Chart." I am also attaching the word template to the email. You need to use the HJC to generate a second draft of your exploration. Don't worry about complete sentences and grammar; instead, really focus on creating a draft that will help you in the subsequent writing process. Once you complete this HJC, you will then return to moodle, and in the area marked "Completed Hero's Journey Chart," you will upload your file.
FYI-Dates on moodle are subject to change. The deadlines will always be covered in class, the blog, and the daily email. The moodle documents and plan are accurate, but the specific deadlines are tentative and based on what we accomplish in class.
For Monday-
Read- (Monday) Vogler "Archetypes" 23-47
(Weds.) Hemingway "Indian Camp" (on moodle and emailed)
Write-Vogler annotation
Complete Hero's journey chart
Do-Post Vogler annotation on blog by 10 am on Monday
Post completed hero's journey on moodle before class. Bring a copy to class.
Have a great weekend and email me with any questions.
Take care,
Kat
