For Monday (10:45)

Hello all,

Today in class, we began the course by participating in a little exercise which focused on our level of dependency. This exercise showed us that we all have a level of responsibility that we want to accept and embrace.

We then shifted our discussion to establishing our syllabus, which is to operate as our contract for the course. I think that you all had amazing suggestions, and I will post the revised syllabus on the moodle, and I am also attaching it to the email. Please make sure that I have clarified your points and observations. Remember, this is our class and the syllabus is our contract/agreement. I will work this weekend to make sure that all my dates are correct on moodle.

The discussion moved to a focus on the Annotated Bibliography Journal requirement. We started off by discussing how we "read" and how these processes. Check out this website for some cool tips on how to read for scholarly pursuits.

The importance of reading and creating your own knowledge from your reading links to the first and most consistent writing component of the course: the annotated bibliography journal. You will read the Vogler readings and then create an annotation for the reading. You will post this journals on your blog (if you have forgotten your blog address go to the class blog ecandp2009spring.blogspot.com to locate your address).

The format for these postings are:

summation of the reading: 1 paragraph (6-8 sentences) that explain on the key points in the reading

reaction to the class reading: 1 paragraph (6-8 sentences) that analyze key points and connections between the reading and your affinity for the subject or discussions in the reading.

reflection on your readings and class discussions: 1 paragraph (6-8 sentences) that explore, synthesize, and/or critique elements from the readings, the class discussions, and your project work.

three questions concerning our readings and discussions: three questions for discussion (no closed ended, yes or no, type questions)

You will then take these texts and post them on your blog. You must post these prior to classes on Monday (deadline is always 7:00 am). Of course, you can submit/post these earlier.

Following our discussion of the postings, we then shifted to a discussion about heroes and fairy tale myths. We discussed the various heroes that we have (it seems that tights are a criteria for a masculine hero). So, I want you to take a look at your "filters" what ideas do you have stuck in your mind in regards to "heroes." Specifically, who was your childhood hero. Please select a fairy-tale or movie character from your childhood (nothing current). Think about how this figure influenced you? How you are similar to this individual? How do you differ? Why do you like this character? Have fun with this exploration.

Craft a one paragraph exploration and post on your blog. You are encouraged to include photos, images, and sounds on your blog to support your ideas. Remember, have fun but think about the connections.

For Monday:

Read:
Monday: Preface and Introduction (just for information not for annotation)
Chapter 1 (for annotation) (on moodle and attached to email)

Weds: O'Conner's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" (on moodle and attached to email)

Write:
Monday: Annotation on blog by 7 am (for Chapter 1 Vogler)
Character Exploration on blog before class on Monday

Do:
Post your annotation and your character exploration on your blog.

Take care, and email me with questions,

Kat
